The Lens Magazine : About The Lens

Magazine Description

The Lens Magazine is Carleton College's Magazine of Politics and Culture. The first-ever interdisciplinary undergraduate magazine, The Lens features the work of over 85 Carleton students in tri-annual issues. Our in-depth articles focus on topics relevant to undergraduate students and faculty at the national level. Our inaugural issue, distributed December 2005, explored the multi-faceted discussion of ethnicity in America. The theme for our Spring Issue is "Neighborhoods," and the Politics, Culture, and Features Teams are well underway in bringing you insightful perspectives and thoughtful commentary on this timely topic.

The Lens has a market on Carleton's campus because it is not intended to compete with The Carletonian or other campus publications. Off-campus, there does not exist another nationally distributed undergraduate magazine.

The Advisory Board

An essential component of The Lens is a board of advisors. Anybody who can act as a specialized resource to the publication can be added to the Board. Below are the requirements for those on the board.

  • Enthusiasm about the goals of The Lens
  • Willingness to be contacted in relevant areas of expertise

The board acts as a resource when brainstorming, looking for editors in specific fields, fielding business-related questions, finding advertisers, soliciting articles, connecting us to national and international interviewees, subscribing and donating. These individuals represent our core of support.

Article Review Process

All articles except those written by Editors must start with an article proposal.

  • Editors-in-Chief, Managing Editors and Chief Editors decide on a theme for the publication.
  • The Business Department advertises for general submissions. Chief and Managing editors solicit individuals for submissions.
  • Chief and Managing Editors discuss the proposals. Chief Editors have final say on which articles are accepted.
  • Chief, Managing and Section editors work closely with selected writers on developing a quality draft.
  • Articles are sent to advisory board members, Copy Editors and Fact-Checkers to ensure relevance and accuracy.
  • A final draft of the article is ready for publishing, contingent on space restraints and cohesiveness of the magazine.
