The Lens Magazine : Submit a Story Proposal

The Lens seeks proposals for articles in the general fields of politics and culture. We encourage creativity in choosing topics in these areas. Proposals are open to everyone, although Carleton students will serve as the main source of writers.

We accept rolling applications, though proposal deadlines for upcoming issues are publicized both on Carleton’s campus and this website. At this time we have no active proposal deadline.

Proposals are not in any way obligated to relate to the issue's theme, but it may serve as a starting point for some.

The purpose of this proposal is to give a general sketch of how your article will fit into the publication. Articles of all lengths are accepted – from short insets of only a page to highly developed main stories of eight to 15 double-spaced pages – but try to limit the size of your article, if at all possible.

If your proposal is selected, you will be asked to write a first draft. There is no guarantee that stories accepted in the proposal process will appear in print. You will work closely with an editor who will provide substantial criticism and may recommend dramatic revisions.
